Lost Planet’s Charlie Johnston on His Favorite Part of the Job
July 18, 2024Charlie Johnston is an editor at Lost Planet, founded by veteran editor Hank Corwin, who has been nominated for Oscars for his work on the films The Big Short, Vice and Don’t Look Up. The company has have offices in Los Angeles and New York City.
“We have always been a creative shop,” explains Johnston. “Most of the editors spent a few years as Hank’s assistant, so we are steeped in the world of music and sound. I think Lost Planet attracts quirky, creative people who collaborate well.”
We reached out to Johnston, whose work includes spots for Nike, Google Pixel, Ally Bank, Samsung, the Boston Bruins, and the PGA’s Masters. His work has earned him Gold at Cannes Lions, a Webby, and other accolades. Before focusing on the commercial space, he edited feature films like “U Turn” and music videos, including The White Stripes’ “The Hardest Button to Button.”
What does your role as editor entail?
I think of my job as a storyteller. When I screen dailies, I find an element to seize and build upon. I use music and sound design to augment the story. I endeavor to fulfill the vision of the director and agency, but I always try to present something they had not thought of.
